How Homes Are Balancing the Grid

Europe’s rapid shift to renewables also brings rising risks of grid imbalances, as the Iberian blackout in May 2025 showed. Real-time digital balancing and demand-side flexibility (DSF) are now essential to keep the grid secure, cut costs, and meet the EU’s 2030 climate targets.

By 2030, DSF could unlock 164 GW of upward flexibility and 130 GW of downward flexibility from EVs, heat pumps, and buildings—saving consumers up to €71 billion annually while avoiding millions of tonnes of CO₂.

Regulators are already moving: from the Clean Energy for All Europeans package to Fit for 55 and ACER guidelines, the momentum is clear. SmartEn, Europe’s leading association for demand-side flexibility, is at the forefront of shaping fair market rules and harmonized standards to unlock scale.
